CBS and Sony Pictures Settle Dispute Over Game Show Rights
LOS ANGELES, CA — CBS and Sony Pictures Television have resolved their year-long conflict concerning the distribution rights for the popular daytime game shows, ‘Jeopardy!’ and ‘Wheel of Fortune.’ The announcement was made on November 7, 2025, signaling an end to the legal battles that have characterized their partnership.
The dispute began when Sony accused CBS of undercutting the shows’ advertising revenues and licensing them at rates below market value. CBS, owned by Paramount, refuted these claims, describing them as false. The tension escalated with accusations of CBS failing to maximize promotional efforts for both shows.
In April, a court ruled against CBS’s bid to block Sony from distributing the high-profile titles. This ruling paved the way for an agreement that renewed distribution rights for both shows. By June, deals were also established allowing streaming on Peacock and Hulu the day after airing.
Under the terms of the settlement, CBS will remain the exclusive domestic distributor of the shows until the end of the 2027-2028 season. As part of the agreement, Sony will take over as the domestic distributor afterward and enhance its role in advertising sales through the 2029-2030 season. CBS, however, will manage marketing and promotions until the 2025-2026 season’s end.
Keith LeGoy, Chairman of Sony Pictures Television, expressed optimism for the future of the franchises, emphasizing the importance of their collaboration moving forward. The joint statement from both companies highlighted their commitment to continue delivering these beloved games to audiences worldwide.
