Celebrated Artist Ioannis Vasilopoulos Passes Away at 66

Orange, Connecticut — Ioannis Nikolaos Vasilopoulos, a renowned artist and designer, passed away on April 7, 2025, at the age of 66. His family announced the news with heavy hearts and expressed their gratitude for the outpouring of love and support from the community.
Born in Athens, Greece, Ioannis immigrated to the United States as a child in 1967. He quickly became influential in the art world, drawing inspiration from American comic books, animation, and the rock music of his youth. His fascination with album cover art—particularly the works of Roger Dean and Storm Thorgerson—motivated him to create iconic designs throughout his career.
Ioannis made a significant mark in the music industry, art directing his first MTV music video for the group Art in America while still in college. The video, released in 1983, gained acclaim and featured the cover art that was later celebrated in the book, “1000 Record Covers” by Michael Ochs.
Over the years, Ioannis collaborated with renowned clients such as Universal Music, Sony Music, and Virgin Records, producing over 350 record covers, singles, and merchandise for various classic rock bands including Deep Purple, Bon Jovi, and Lynyrd Skynyrd. His contributions to rock music cover art solidified his legacy as one of the genre’s greatest artists.
Ioannis was also the co-author of “Fade to Black” with Martin Popoff, along with “Get the Led Out,” a book on Led Zeppelin with artwork by Ioannis himself. His distinct style and ability to encapsulate the spirit of rock music made him a beloved figure in the art community.
He is survived by his wife, Lisa; daughter, Maria; son-in-law, Conor; grandchildren, Henry and Jack; brother, George; sister-in-law, Gaylene; niece, Sophia; and sister, Elizabeth. In remembrance of Ioannis, his family plans to carry on his artistic legacy.
“There were so many things Ioannis wanted to do and so many new projects he could not wait to share,” his family shared. “His energy will live on through his incredible art.”
Funeral services are scheduled for April 11, 2025. A gathering for family and friends will be held at Saint Barbara Greek Orthodox Church in Orange from 5:00 PM to 6:30 PM, followed by a Funeral Mass at 6:30 PM.
In memory of Ioannis, friends and supporters are encouraged to plant a memorial tree, continuing his legacy while remembering the joy he brought to so many through his art.
