Cissy Houston Memorial Celebration

NEWARK, N.J. — The life of two-time Grammy-winning soul and gospel artist Cissy Houston was celebrated in her hometown of Newark on Thursday, October 17, 2024, at the New Hope Baptist Church. The event, described as music-filled, drew numerous notable figures, including Dionne Warwick, BeBe Winans, and Darlene Love, along with political leaders who paid tribute to the storied singer known affectionately as the “Duchess of Gospel.”

Houston, who passed away on October 7, was eulogized by her niece Dionne Warwick, who expressed deep admiration and gratitude for her aunt’s influence. “She gave me the right to be me,” Warwick said during the ceremony, which was attended by family, friends, and fans. Houston’s coffin was prominently displayed at the church, where she served as a longtime congregant and choir leader.

Newark Mayor Ras Baraka and New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy were among the speakers who acknowledged Houston’s legacy as a musical icon. Murphy described her as a “musical legend” and remarked upon the rare power of her voice, stating, “While each one of us are born with a voice, only a select few of us are endowed with a voice that is powerful enough to reach into the hearts of millions.”

Throughout the ceremony, various musical performances highlighted Houston’s impact on the music industry. Donnie McClurkin performed a musical tribute, while Gary Houston, her oldest son, sang “Freedom.” Darlene Love performed “It Is Well with My Soul,” and a massive choir lent their voices in celebration.

The service was not without humor, as friends and family members shared anecdotes. BeBe Winans recounted humorous and heartfelt stories about Houston, including her sharp wit with a humorous remark about how she “could cut you with her eyes.” Winans also conveyed her compassionate nature through a personal story about how she supported him following the death of her daughter, Whitney Houston.

Cissy Houston’s career saw her emerge from a family gospel act to become an in-demand session singer. She performed alongside many legendary artists and her vocals were a staple on numerous iconic records. Her collaborations extended across various genres, reflecting her belief in musical diversity. Among those performing at her side historically included Aretha Franklin, Lou Rawls, and The Drifters.

Reverend Dr. Michael Eric Dyson praised Houston for her commitment to diversity and collaboration across cultural boundaries. “What she represents is so powerful that it continues to echo to this day,” Dyson remarked.

The service concluded with a final farewell as six pallbearers carried her casket out of the church while the choir sang “He Shall Lead His Flock,” marking the end of an emotional tribute to one of gospel music’s most beloved figures.
