Imagine spending just one day working at your favorite football club from childhood, then imagine doing so for 14,610 days. This has been the reality for a legendary figure at Crystal Palace. On September 17th, 40 years ago, Terry ‘Tel’ Byfield commenced his journey as a receptionist at Crystal Palace through the Youth Training Scheme. Fast forward four decades, and Byfield’s commitment to the club is as strong as ever, having served in numerous roles throughout his illustrious career.

Reflecting on his journey, Terry remarked, “Looking back over this time, both on and off the pitch, there have been many highs and lows. I suppose it feels like it’s gone by quickly because no two days are the same at a football club.” He acknowledges the privilege of working at a place he’s loved since childhood, highlighting how every season brings new experiences.

Hailing from a South London-based family with many Crystal Palace supporters, Terry’s love for the club grew in the 1970s. He fondly remembers attending the games and eventually becoming a Season Ticket Holder. Upon completing college with three O-Levels and feeling uncertain about his future, Terry decided to reach out directly to Crystal Palace’s Chairman, Ron Noades, seeking employment. To his delight, he was offered a role through the Youth Training Scheme, earning £26.25 a week.

Terry’s career at Palace could have ended early when there were discussions about terminating Youth Training Scheme roles. Fortunately, his salary was increased, allowing him to stay. Over the years, Byfield’s roles expanded, moving from reception to becoming Assistant Club Secretary, and eventually, Communications Manager.

In his role as Communications Manager, Terry worked alongside myriad managers and players as media demands grew. He became an essential part of the club’s publication team, creating and managing the match program, Palace News, and the popular ClubCall service, providing fans with direct audio updates from the club.

As the club grew in stature with new training grounds and improved facilities, Terry expressed admiration for how much the club has developed since his early days. “Where the club is now… is just another level compared to those early years,” Terry commented. “I’ve been fortunate to witness this transformation.”

Terry credits several individuals for his prolonged success, including Ron Noades for giving him the initial opportunity, Novello Noades, Steve Coppell, Iain Dowie, and many more. “In this job, every day is different, and working in a familiar environment is something I’m proud of,” he said. “It’s been an exciting journey.”

As Terry celebrates 40 years at Crystal Palace, his impact on the club remains immeasurable. Whether it’s recognizing the changing landscape of football or dealing with varied roles, Terry Byfield has embodied dedication and passion for Crystal Palace, making him an integral part of the club’s fabric.
