Celta Vigo Vs Girona 2024

Celta Vigo secured a 1-1 draw against Girona on Sunday, as Iago Aspas came off the bench to level the score after Yangel Herrera had given the visitors the lead. Girona extended their winless run to four matches in LaLiga.

Girona, who finished third last season after strong performances against Real Madrid and Barcelona, now find themselves in 12th place with nine points from eight games. Meanwhile, Celta moved up to ninth in the standings with 10 points, pending the results of other weekend fixtures.

Dominating possession throughout the match, Girona took the lead in the 38th minute when Venezuelan midfielder Herrera headed in a cross from Dutch defender Daley Blind. The Girona goalkeeper, Paulo Gazzaniga, faced little pressure during the first half as Celta failed to register a shot on target at the Estadio de Balaidos.

The match took a dramatic turn in the 81st minute when substitute and Celta captain, Aspas, equalized with a composed strike. Swede midfielder Williot Swedberg set up Aspas, who scored on his 501st appearance for Celta. “I’m happy and grateful to the people, the fans, the children. For me, it’s a gift every game I play in front of my people,” Aspas shared. “I saw the ball on the edge of the area, and those are the kinds of shots I like.”

Girona faced early challenges in the match as defensive midfielder Oriol Romeu had to leave the field due to injury, and Blind was also substituted out before their upcoming Champions League fixture against Feyenoord.
