Celtic’s Defensive Dilemmas: Nawrocki’s Struggles and Scales’ Rise

In a bid to strengthen their squad for the new season, Celtic FC made several signings in the recent summer transfer window. Seven players, including Arne Engels, Adam Idah, Paulo Bernardo, Auston Trusty, Luke McCowan, Viljami Sinisalo, and Kasper Schmeichel, joined the club on permanent deals, while Alex Valle arrived on loan from Barcelona.

Auston Trusty, secured from Sheffield United, has been a regular starter amid the absence of Cameron Carter-Vickers. Trusty has often been paired with Liam Scales, effectively sidelining other candidates for the central defense position, most notably Maik Nawrocki.

Nawrocki was acquired from Legia Warsaw during the summer of 2023, following the departure of Carl Starfelt to Celta Vigo. Celtic reportedly spent a significant fee for the 22-year-old, hoping he would be a robust partner for Carter-Vickers. Unfortunately, Nawrocki’s performances have not met expectations.

During his time at Legia Warsaw, Nawrocki displayed commendable statistics in the 2022/23 Ekstraklasa, with a pass accuracy of 86% and achieving 2.5 tackles and interceptions per game. However, his time at Celtic has seen his market value drop significantly to £2.5 million, according to Transfermarkt, below the £4.3 million Celtic paid for him.

In contrast, Liam Scales has seen his value rise. Transfermarkt estimates his valuation at £2.9 million, higher than Nawrocki’s. Scales’ performances have cemented his spot as Carter-Vickers’ regular partner under manager Rodgers. He started in 33 Scottish Premiership matches and featured in all of Celtic’s Champions League fixtures last season, whereas Nawrocki’s appearances have been limited.

This disparity has led to questions about the efficacy of Nawrocki’s signing. Nawrocki has struggled to break into the top three central defense options, with Scales, Carter-Vickers, and Trusty all preferred.

As Celtic continue their campaign, Nawrocki’s limited involvement suggests a need for reassessment of his role and future at the club. For now, Scales remains a key figure in Celtic’s defensive lineup, bringing both stability and experience to the team.
