Celtic Manager Brendan Rodgers Rejects Atletico Madrid's Bid For Matt O'riley

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has firmly rejected Atletico Madrid‘s bid for midfielder Matt O'Riley, maintaining that the player will not be leaving the club. Atletico’s offer was deemed inadequate by Rodgers, who emphasized that Celtic will not consider any further approaches.

Atletico’s interest in O’Riley was piqued after the midfielder’s impressive performances against them in this season’s Champions League group stage. While Celtic’s lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership was reduced to five points by Rangers‘ recent victory over Hibernian, Rodgers is determined to strengthen the squad rather than weaken it during the transfer window.

In a statement to reporters, Rodgers said, ‘Matt is a player we don’t want to lose and he won’t be going anywhere in January. He has become an integral part of our team, showcasing his talents both domestically and internationally with Denmark.’

O’Riley, who joined Celtic from MK Dons in 2022, is a strong contender for a place in Denmark’s Euro 2024 squad. The 23-year-old midfielder has been impressive this season, contributing 10 goals and 12 assists. O’Riley recently extended his contract with Celtic until 2027, indicating his contentment with his current development at Celtic Park.

Rodgers acknowledged Atletico Madrid’s stature as a notable European club but highlighted that O’Riley recognizes the positive environment he has at Celtic. Rodgers also emphasized that the valuation offered by Atletico did not align with O’Riley’s quality as a player and reiterated Celtic’s position of not wanting to sell.
