Boston Celtics Jayson Tatum Injury Phoenix Suns Game

SACRAMENTO, California — Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum is listed as doubtful for Wednesday’s matchup against the Phoenix Suns following a left ankle sprain sustained in Monday’s victory over the Sacramento Kings.

The injury occurred during the third quarter of the Celtics’ 113-95 win. Tatum landed awkwardly on Kings center Domantas Sabonis‘ foot after making a three-pointer that extended Boston’s lead to ten points. As a result, Sabonis was assessed a flagrant 1 foul for placing Tatum in a precarious landing zone.

Tatum managed to shoot one of two free throws before departing for the locker room. Despite the early exit, he led all players with 25 points, along with seven rebounds and eight assists, while shooting 8-of-15 from the field in just 26 minutes of play.

After the game, Tatum described his injury to ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne as “just sore.” He was seen leaving Golden 1 Arena with a slight limp but did not require crutches or a walking boot, indicating a more moderate injury than initially feared.

The Celtics are set to face the Suns with tip-off scheduled for 7 p.m. at Footprint Center in Phoenix. Tatum’s absence could significantly impact Boston’s performance, as he has been a pivotal player, averaging 27.1 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 6.0 assists per game this season.

In a report on Tuesday, the Celtics confirmed Tatum’s status on the injury report: “Jayson Tatum (left ankle sprain) – DOUBTFUL; Xavier Tillman (left knee joint sprain) – OUT.” As Boston approaches the playoffs with hopes of securing the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference, they will likely take a cautious approach regarding Tatum’s return.

Fans have voiced their thoughts on social media, expressing a mix of relief that Tatum’s injury isn’t more severe. One fan, @KolTheCarry, noted, “Doubtful is insanely good news honestly, glad it’s not super serious,” while another tweeted, “Rest up JT; the guys got this one. We need you 100% for the playoffs.”

As the Celtics prepare to take on Devin Booker and the Suns, they maintain their competitive edge in the Eastern Conference. The Suns, currently in the thick of a play-in race, have recently gained momentum, winning four straight games. Their positioning, however, remains precarious with Sacramento trailing closely behind.
