Celtics Make NBA History With Record-Breaking Three-Point Performance

BOSTON, Mass. — The Boston Celtics shattered the NBA record for most three-pointers in a single season on Friday, achieving the milestone with a 123-103 victory over the Phoenix Suns at TD Garden.
Payton Pritchard‘s three-pointer at 8:19 in the second quarter marked the 1,364th triple for the Celtics this season, surpassing the previous record held by Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and the 2022-23 Golden State Warriors. The Celtics made a total of 14 three-pointers in the game, continuing their trend as the league’s most prolific long-range shooting team.
“We’ve got a really good team,” said Celtics forward Jayson Tatum. “A talented group of guys. We play to our strengths, and everybody can space the floor and is a threat behind the line.”
Jaylen Brown led the scoring for Boston with 31 points on 10-of-16 shooting, while Tatum added 23 points and previously struggling guard Derrick White came close to a triple-double with 12 points, nine rebounds, and seven assists.
The Celtics enjoyed a strong first half, leading 60-47 at the break, highlighted by Brown’s swift ten points in the opening minutes. Despite being guarded by the Suns, Brown found creative ways to score, including an impressive one-footed jumper from just inside halfcourt that further showcased his talent.
“I think it’s important to play through the discomfort,” Brown said regarding his recent knee issues. “I’m utilizing these games to teach my body to handle pain and find my rhythm again.”
Despite the stellar performance, the Celtics held Bradley Beal, who had only one point on 0-for-7 shooting, under wraps, after he missed the prior eight games due to a hamstring injury. The Suns’ star, Kevin Durant, was not in action due to an ankle injury.
Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla praised Brown’s efforts and his dedication to overcoming challenges. “It’s just communicating and trusting how he feels. He knows what he needs,” Mazzulla said.
In what was a chippy game, Kristaps Porzingis suffered a facial injury after a mid-air collision but continued to contribute, finishing with 15 points and four rebounds before leaving the game. The Celtics announced he would require stitches but was in good spirits post-game.
As the playoffs approach, the victory marked a significant moment for the Celtics, who are currently positioned as the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference. The team has now secured a playoff spot, continuing its streak of 11 consecutive trips to the postseason.
The Celtics will host the Washington Wizards on Sunday, with former Celtics including Malcolm Brogdon and Marcus Smart returning to Boston.
