Celtics Navigate Injuries as Bucks Face Lillard’s Uncertain Return

BOSTON, Mass. — With just ten games remaining in the regular season, the Boston Celtics are positioned securely as the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference. Following a recent victory against the Sacramento Kings, the team is focusing on managing the health of its star players as the playoffs approach. Jayson Tatum, who has been an essential part of the team’s success, is listed as doubtful for their upcoming game against the Phoenix Suns on Wednesday night.
The Celtics are preparing for the playoffs while keeping an eye on their Eastern Conference rivals. On Tuesday evening, the Milwaukee Bucks received concerning news regarding their star player, Damian Lillard. According to ESPN‘s Shams Charania, Lillard has been ruled out indefinitely due to a blood clot diagnosis.
Lillard last played on March 18 and had already missed three games due to a calf issue before this latest injury was identified. Bucks General Manager Jon Horst expressed confidence in Lillard’s recovery, saying, “We will support him as he moves through this weekly process of strict criteria to ensure that it is safe for him to return to play. Doctors have indicated that his situation is very unlikely to occur again. We are thankful that this was identified and medicated quickly, which helps with the recovery.”
The news comes at a difficult time for the Bucks, who are in a tight race for playoff positioning with the Detroit Pistons for the fifth seed in the East. Lillard’s absence is impactful, and the team will take a cautious approach, as blood clots are serious injuries that cannot be hurried. The haunting history of similar injuries, affecting players like Chris Bosh and Victor Wembanyama, underscores the need for careful management.
So far this season, Lillard has averaged 24.9 points, 7.1 assists, and 4.7 rebounds on 44.8% shooting from the field and 37.6% from beyond the arc. His performance alongside Giannis Antetokounmpo has made them one of the most formidable duos in the league. Losing a player of Lillard’s caliber raises questions about the Bucks’ potential success as playoffs loom closer.
As the regular season winds down, Milwaukee currently finds itself slotted between the 4th and 6th seeds in the East, separated by only two games from the Pacers and the Pistons. With the playoffs set to begin on April 19, how Lillard’s recovery progresses could significantly impact the Bucks’ postseason plans.
This week, the Celtics are on a six-game road trip, beginning with their matchup against the Suns. While Boston focuses on maintaining their strong standing in the conference, the Lillard situation serves as a stark reminder of how quickly circumstances can change in the competitive landscape of the NBA.
