Jayson Tatum Celtics Game 5 Surgery Reaction

BOSTON — The Boston Celtics received a motivational message from Jayson Tatum after his Achilles surgery on Tuesday in New York. Coach Joe Mazzulla shared details with reporters on May 14, ahead of Game 5 against the New York Knicks.

The team spent Wednesday balancing their compassion for Tatum during his recovery with the urgency of winning the critical playoff game. Mazzulla said, “If there’s anybody who can handle it, it’s him. He sent a message to the staff and the players today. So he’s doing better.”

The atmosphere in the Celtics’ locker room on game day was markedly more upbeat compared to their mood after a disappointing Game 4. Veteran Al Horford welcomed every player with smiles, and younger players like Jordan Walsh and JD Davison were notably engaging. Payton Pritchard noted the team’s focus solely on Game 5, stating, “We gotta come out, compete and win the game for him.”

Rookie Baylor Scheierman expressed the team’s determination to rally behind Tatum. “It’s tough seeing our leader go down,” he said. “You try to just be there for him, try to stay positive, even in a situation that’s tough like that.” Mazzulla emphasized the importance of supporting their injured star while remaining focused on a win.

Knicks player Jalen Brunson also extended his sympathy to Tatum, saying, “The league needs Jayson Tatum. He still has a lot to do in his career.” Despite Tatum’s absence, the Celtics plan to leverage their depth. Kristaps Porzingis will start alongside Horford, with players like Jrue Holiday and Derrick White stepping into crucial roles.

The Celtics have proven they can win without Tatum, holding an 8-2 record without him this season, including a playoff win against the Orlando Magic when Jaylen Brown scored 36 points. Mazzulla remains optimistic, asserting that the team’s shared experience in managing injuries will aid them as they face elimination down 3-1 against the Knicks.

As the Celtics prepare to step onto the court, they carry Tatum’s encouraging words with them, focused on achieving victory for their teammate.
