Central Coast Mariners Triumph in AFC Cup Final Against Al Ahed
Central Coast Mariners have made history by clinching a hard-fought victory against Al Ahed in the AFC Cup final in Oman. The Mariners emerged victorious with a late 1-0 lead, securing the title and a substantial prizemoney of $2.3 million.
Under the guidance of coach Mark Jackson, the Central Coast Mariners have etched their name in the annals of the AFC Cup, becoming only the second A-League outfit to claim an Asian club competition win. Their triumph follows the success of Western Sydney Wanderers in the AFC Champions League back in 2014.
The decisive goal in the final came in the 84th minute courtesy of substitute Alou Kuol, propelling the Mariners to glory and setting the stage for a potential treble as they aim to clinch the A-League championship once again.
Reflecting on the monumental win, Coach Jackson expressed his unwavering belief in his squad’s ability to secure the victory. Despite a challenging match against formidable opponents Al Ahed, the Mariners displayed resilience and determination throughout the game.
Goalkeeper Danny Vukovic emerged as a standout player, making a crucial save in the first half to thwart Al-Ahed striker Lee Erwin. Jackson commended Vukovic’s leadership on the field, highlighting his stellar performance and role as a cornerstone of the team.
The AFC Cup victory holds an even greater significance as the competition is set to be discontinued next season, making the Mariners the final club to claim this prestigious title. The tournament will give way to the introduction of the AFC Champions League Elite, AFC Champions League 2, and AFC Challenge League, marking a new era in Asian football.
Central Coast Mariners’ success in the AFC Cup final guarantees their participation in the upcoming 2024-25 Champions League Elite competition, cementing their status as a formidable force in the Asian football landscape.
