The Central Coast Roosters clinched a thrilling victory over the Macarthur Wests Tigers, securing back-to-back championships in the Under 16s Andrew Johns Cup. The clash unfolded at the historic Cessnock Sportsground in Cessnock, where rugby league fans witnessed a fierce battle between the two talented teams.
Right winger Semi Leweniqila set the tone for the Roosters just two minutes into the game, scoring the opening try and igniting the contest with his speed and agility. Despite a brief scoring lull, both sides showcased stellar defense and tactical prowess in the initial stages.
As the first half progressed, the Roosters gained momentum with giant-sized forward Blessing Foini crashing over for a try near the half-time mark. Foini’s physical presence proved crucial as the Roosters asserted dominance, heading into the break with a 12-0 lead.
The Roosters wasted no time extending their lead in the second half, with Foini once again making his mark by laying the groundwork for another try. Five-eighth Jack Dean-Potaka exploited a gap in the Tigers’ defense, increasing the Roosters’ advantage to 16-0.
As the Tigers fought to regain control, the Roosters capitalized on a series of penalties and defensive lapses, allowing right center Koby Houghton to score effortlessly. With a commanding 20-0 lead with minutes remaining, the Roosters seemed poised for victory.
However, the Macarthur Wests Tigers refused to go down without a fight, launching a spirited comeback in the closing stages of the match. Speedy fullback Ronel Ribucan sparked hope for the Tigers with a try in the corner, signaling a potential shift in momentum.
Building on their newfound momentum, the Tigers struck again as left winger Mawin Tema Soaai showcased his speed and skill, setting up a remarkable length-of-the-field try finished off by captain Brock Achurch. Despite the late surge from the Tigers, the Central Coast Roosters held firm to secure a hard-fought 20-12 victory and clinch their third title in the Andrew Johns Cup.
