Central Florida Faces Heavy Rain, Thunderstorms This Sunday

ORLANDO, Fla. – Central Florida is bracing for a significant weather event this Sunday, with heavy rain and thunderstorms expected to sweep across the region. Meteorologists are warning residents that rain will begin overnight, with scattered showers and storms appearing before dawn.
The strong storm activity is forecasted to peak late Sunday afternoon and linger through the early evening, prompting meteorologists to classify the day as an Impact Day.
“We’re looking at an 80% chance of heavy rain, with localized damaging wind gusts and possible hail. The heaviest rain, between 1 to 3 inches, is anticipated over areas between Interstate 4 and Interstate 75,” said T.J. Springer from the FOX 35 Storm Team.
While the morning may initially allow for outdoor activities, the thunderstorm risk is expected to increase as the day progresses, particularly from noon until 8 p.m. During this timeline, storms are likely to become widespread.
“A few of these storms could reach severe levels, with wind gusts predicted to be between 45-55 mph,” Springer added. “Given the quick development of these storms, we also expect frequent lightning and very heavy downpours.”
The storm system will wrap up into Sunday night, leaving behind partly-cloudy skies with lingering showers as temperatures drop to the upper 60s. On Monday, a cold front is expected to approach the region, potentially bringing further isolated showers and storms.
Residents are advised to remain vigilant, as rain totals could vary significantly across Central Florida, leading to potential flash flooding, especially in areas that have recently experienced drought conditions. Despite the low chances, there is a slight possibility of brief tornado activity.
As the weekend approaches, forecasters are monitoring the evolving situation closely. The FOX 35 Storm Tracker Radar will provide live updates as storms develop across the area.
