Chad Powers: A Surprising New Comedy Series on Disney+
LOS ANGELES, CA — A new comedy series titled “Chad Powers” premiered on Disney+ this week, offering an eccentric blend of humor and drama that has captured viewer’s attention.
Starring Glen Powell as the titular Chad Powers, the show tells the story of Russ Holliday, a disgraced college quarterback who seeks redemption after his career crumbles eight years prior. Inspired by his father’s Academy Award-winning movie prosthetics and a classic film poster, Russ transforms himself into Chad, an endearing but awkward Southern persona.
The show consists of six episodes, with two episodes released during the premiere. Creators Powell and Michael Waldron, known for their work on “Rick and Morty” and “Loki,” blend absurd humor reminiscent of “Ted Lasso” with an unexpected depth that emerges in the season’s final episodes.
“I was convinced it was one of the worst shows of 2025 after the first two episodes,” an early reviewer noted. “But the last three episodes revealed hints of brilliance that forced me to reconsider.”n
The series also introduces several quirky characters, including a hardworking head coach portrayed by Steve Zahn and his assistant coach, Ricky, played by Perry Mattfeld. As Chad navigates his complex relationship with these characters, conflicts arise that pull the show into dramatic territory, showcasing Powell’s impressive range.
Despite mixed reviews and potential criticisms of being derivative, Waldron had faith in the concept. “Most people might think this is probably going to be a piece of shit,” he said. “But how could they make something compelling out of this?”
For Powell, the challenge lied in reinventing an established trope. The series manages to present its narrative in a fresh light, blending influences from films like “Armageddon” and works by filmmakers Nancy Meyers and the Safdie brothers.
As of now, new episodes of “Chad Powers” are set to release weekly, keeping audiences guessing how Russ’s journey will unfold. The show is available for streaming on Disney+, and while its tone may not please everyone, it’s certainly an interesting watch.
