Chaos Erupts on Temple University Campus During Spring Break

PHILADELPHIA — Temple University police are ramping up efforts to identify individuals involved in a series of assaults and robberies that erupted on campus over the weekend. The violence, which targeted mostly students, occurred amid large gatherings of juveniles and teenagers celebrating spring break.
On Saturday and Sunday evenings, an estimated 200 to 300 young people swarmed the campus, leading to several incidents of violence. Six individuals were reported assaulted and two others were robbed, prompting Temple officials to hastily coordinate with local police to address the situation.
“It’s a shame because we’re here to get an education. You don’t really expect any of those things to happen outside,” said freshman Anais Ortiz-Garcia, reflecting on the unsettling atmosphere on campus.
In response to the chaos, police released images of three juveniles identified as “persons of interest” in connection to a robbery that occurred on Sunday night on West Montgomery Avenue. Eight individuals have already been arrested, including seven female juveniles involved in the assault of a 12-year-old girl.
“It’s very sad because this is our campus; we deserve to be safe here,” added senior Joanna Imburgia, calling for increased safety measures from the school.
Temple University President John Fry condemned the incidents, stating, “Incidents like these are deeply unsettling and completely unacceptable to both the university community and our neighbors. We cannot allow this type of behavior to become normalized in the area surrounding our campus.”
As tensions escalated, Temple University Public Safety reported that heightened police presence had already been planned due to local schools being on spring break. Officers were able to intervene and restore order after numerous disturbances.
Captain James Hennigan of Temple University’s Public Safety department emphasized the importance of community vigilance. “We ask parents to be aware of where their kids are, what they’re doing, monitor their social media and if they see anything concerning, to report that to police,” he urged.
Analyses of surveillance footage from around the university and surrounding areas are ongoing, as law enforcement seeks more information about those involved in the weekend’s unrest. Police are actively encouraging anyone with information about the suspects to reach out to the Temple University Police Department’s Investigations Unit at (215) 204-7178.
During the press conference on April 21, officers detailed multiple incidents. On April 19, three assaults were carried out, and a robbery followed, with even more incidents reported the next day. Police continue to investigate conditions that allowed these events to escalate.
Witnesses described witnessing chaotic scenes as groups of unsupervised minors unleashed their frustration during the holiday weekend. Temple sophomore Tony McCray recounted watching from his residence hall, stating, “It was pretty crazy. A lot of high schoolers on campus— it’s reasonable for them to be here, but the behavior was unnecessary.”
In light of these incidents, students are urged to utilize the university’s escort system and remain vigilant while navigating campus. The Division of Student Affairs is working closely with affected students and community members to ensure safety measures are prioritized moving forward.
This string of violence has alarmed students and raised questions about campus safety as efforts to bring those responsible to justice continue.
