Chargers Host Free Agent TE Tyler Conklin Amid Tight End Search

Los Angeles, CA — The Los Angeles Chargers are actively seeking to bolster their tight end position and have invited veteran Tyler Conklin for a visit, according to Mike Garafolo of NFL Media. The meeting comes as the Chargers look to solidify their roster ahead of the upcoming season.
Conklin, 29, spent the last three seasons with the New York Jets, where he established himself as a reliable target in the passing game. In the 2024 season, he played in all 16 games, recording 51 receptions for 449 yards and four touchdowns.
Originally drafted in the fifth round of the 2018 NFL Draft by the Minnesota Vikings, Conklin had a steady rise in his career. During his time with the Vikings, he proved his capability, culminating in a breakout season that led him to sign a three-year, $21 million contract with the Jets in 2022. Over his seven-season career, he has accumulated 263 receptions for 2,544 yards and 11 touchdowns.
Chargers’ current tight end options include Will Dissly, Tucker Fisk, and McCallan Castles. While Dissly is under contract for another two seasons, the other two tight ends are not returning. Currently, the Chargers are considering their options in free agency and the NFL Draft to enhance their roster. Conklin’s visit could indicate the team’s intent to add depth to the tight end position.
The Chargers recently hosted Evan Engram for a similar visit, but he ultimately signed with the Denver Broncos in a two-year deal worth $23 million. With limited options remaining on the free-agent market, a move for Conklin could solidify the Chargers’ receiving corps.
“Tyler Conklin would bring a solid floor to our passing game,” said Chargers assistant GM Chad Alexander, who was previously the Jets’ Director of Player Personnel. His established connection with Conklin may play a crucial role in negotiations.
With a low drop percentage—0% in 2024 and 1.6% in 2023—Conklin has shown that he can be a dependable target, primarily focused on catching passes rather than blocking. His addition would provide the Chargers with a versatile option that could complement their existing roster.
As the Chargers gear up for the next phase of free agency and the NFL Draft, Conklin represents a potential short-term solution. If they do not pursue a high-profile trade for players like Dallas Goedert or Mark Andrews, Conklin would fit their needs well.
