Chargers Likely to Cut Joey Bosa, Potential New Teams Emerge
LOS ANGELES, Calif. — The Los Angeles Chargers are expected to part ways with veteran edge defender Joey Bosa, a move that could save the team $25.4 million in cap space. Bosa, a four-time Pro Bowler and former Defensive Rookie of the Year, has struggled with injuries in recent seasons, limiting his impact on the field.
Bosa, 29, was the Chargers’ first-round pick in 2016 and quickly became a cornerstone of their defense. He signed a $135 million extension in 2020 but has played just 14 games combined over the past two seasons. In 2024, he recorded five sacks and 13 quarterback hits, a far cry from his peak performance.
“Joey is still a good player, but he’s not providing the superstar production we’re paying for,” said a team source. “The cap savings are too significant to ignore.”
The Chargers are reportedly focused on re-signing fellow edge rusher Khalil Mack, which could signal the end of Bosa’s tenure in Los Angeles. General Manager Joe Hortiz and head coach Jim Harbaugh have praised Mack’s contributions, hinting at a potential shift in defensive priorities.
Despite his recent struggles, Bosa remains a sought-after player. Teams like the Carolina Panthers and Kansas City Chiefs are rumored to be interested in acquiring him. The Panthers, who finished with one of the league’s worst defenses in 2024, could pair Bosa with star defensive tackle Derrick Brown to bolster their pass rush. Meanwhile, the Chiefs, who secured the top seed in the AFC last season, are looking to improve their edge defense to complement standout defensive tackle Chris Jones.
“One team’s trash is another team’s treasure,” said an NFL analyst. “Bosa could still be a valuable addition for a contender.”
If released, Bosa could also attract trade interest. The New England Patriots, with ample cap space, are seen as a potential suitor. A trade could net the Chargers a third-round draft pick, providing additional resources for their roster rebuild.
Bosa’s departure would mark the end of an era for the Chargers, but the team appears ready to move forward. With Tuli Tuipulotu emerging as a promising young edge rusher and the 2025 NFL Draft offering additional talent, the Chargers are poised to reshape their defense under Hortiz and Harbaugh.
