Joey Bosa Los Angeles Chargers Release

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — The Los Angeles Chargers announced the release of veteran outside linebacker Joey Bosa on Wednesday, just ahead of the 2025 NFL New League Year, making him a free agent. Bosa, who was selected third overall in the 2016 NFL Draft, spent nine seasons with the team and leaves a significant mark in Chargers history.

During his time with Los Angeles, Bosa earned accolades including five Pro Bowl selections and the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year honors in 2016 for his impressive performance, which included 10.5 sacks and 17 tackles for loss. Bosa famously set an NFL record by recording 19 sacks in his first 20 career games.

In total, Bosa started 83 of 107 regular-season games and appeared in four playoff contests, amassing 343 tackles, 72 sacks, 157 quarterback hits, 87 tackles for loss, 17 forced fumbles, and four recoveries throughout his career. His 72 career sacks rank second in franchise history.

Chargers General Manager Joe Hortiz expressed his respect for Bosa during comments made at the 2025 NFL Combine last week. The decision to release Bosa is expected to save the Chargers roughly $25 million against the salary cap this season, increasing their current projected cap space to around $91 million.

Despite his early success, Bosa faced significant injury challenges over the past three seasons, including issues with his groin, foot, and back that limited him to just 28 games and 14 sacks since the start of the 2022 season. “The pain from an early-season back injury meant he could hardly walk or sleep,” Bosa said regarding his struggles this fall. Nevertheless, he persevered and contributed to the Chargers’ playoff berth.

The impact of Bosa’s departure raises questions about the future of the Chargers’ edge rusher position. Last season, the group included Bosa, Khalil Mack, Tuli Tuipulotu, and Bud Dupree. While Tuipulotu and Dupree remain under contract, Mack is set to become a free agent. If both players leave, it will signal a substantial change within the unit.

If Mack decides to return, he could be a vital presence on the lineup and in the locker room for the Chargers. Regardless, Bosa’s release may signal an opportunity for Los Angeles to consider enhancements to their defensive line through free agency or the upcoming draft.
