Chargers Rookie Receivers Face Pressure as Training Camp Progresses

Los Angeles, CA — As the Los Angeles Chargers continue their training camp, rookie wide receiver Tre Harris has garnered significant attention for his dropped passes. However, his struggles have become overshadowed by KeAndre Lambert-Smith‘s impressive performances. Harris, selected in the second round of the NFL Draft, appears to be progressing slower than anticipated.
Now, another rookie, Quentin Johnston, has entered the spotlight for similar issues. Although Johnston has shown potential, a concerning drop during a recent seven-on-seven drill drew attention. On a third-and-10 play, quarterback Justin Herbert delivered a catchable ball, but Johnston mishandled it, allowing it to drop to the ground.
The question remains whether this drop is an isolated incident or indicative of a deeper problem as Johnston continues to struggle with drops throughout his young career. The Chargers’ roster depth has increased this offseason with the additions of Harris, Lambert-Smith, and veteran Keenan Allen, putting Johnston’s snap count at risk.
Aside from the wide receivers, Herbert, who has never played in a preseason game before, expressed his desire to gain experience against opposing defenses. After a canceled joint practice with the Rams, Herbert proposed to his head coach, Jim Harbaugh, the idea of playing to build chemistry with his team. Herbert is expected to play just a few series before being replaced by backup players.
Raheim Sanders, another rookie, is also vying for a roster spot after leading the team in offensive snaps among running backs. His performance will be critical as he tries to solidify his place in a competitive running back room.
Alongside his offensive contributions, Sanders’ special teams usage will be crucial as he seeks to impress the coaches despite competition from other undrafted talents like Kimani Vidal and Hassan Haskins.
Another rookie making waves is Caleb Murphy, who has excelled in the edge rusher role, compiling two sacks and five pressures. His standout performance may guarantee him a spot on the roster.
However, the roster is tight, and there are concerns for undrafted players like Marlowe Wax, who has demonstrated skill on defense but faces stiff competition.
As the Chargers prepare to meet their next preseason opponent, the pressure to perform intensifies for players on the edge of the 53-man roster. This includes cornerback Eric Rogers, who was sidelined with an injury after a strong showing last week. His absence could significantly impact his chances of making the final cut.
With the clock ticking down to final roster cuts on August 26, the Chargers’ coaching staff faces critical decisions regarding which players will make the roster and which will be relegated to the practice squad.
