Chargers Secure Key Free Agent Signing with Rodrick Becton

LOS ANGELES, CA — The Los Angeles Chargers have signed guard Rodrick Becton to a two-year contract worth $20 million, the team announced on Friday. This move comes as the Chargers aim to bolster their offensive line amid struggles to establish a consistent rushing attack last season.
Becton, who had a standout year with the Philadelphia Eagles, is considered a vital acquisition for the Chargers. Last season, the Chargers’ interior offensive line was graded among the worst in the NFL in run block win rate, ranking 160th at center, 165th at left guard, and 188th at right guard. This lack of effectiveness hindered the team from executing coach Jim Harbaugh‘s game plan and running the football efficiently.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the addition of Becton could lead to the potential release of right guard Storm Norton, which would save the Chargers approximately $6.75 million. Becton played a pivotal role in the Eagles’ Super Bowl run, starting 15 regular-season games and contributing significantly as a run blocker.
“Rodrick’s ability to transition from tackle to guard has been impressive,” said an anonymous team source. “His performance last season has proven he can dominate in the run game.”
The 25-year-old Becton, originally drafted in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft by the New York Jets, switched from tackle to guard last year, marking a career renaissance. He finished with a run block win rate that placed him 24th among guards, outperforming teammates Johnson and Pipkins, who ranked 43rd and 50th respectively.
Having struggled with injuries during his tenure in New York, Becton’s successful season in Philadelphia gave him newfound confidence and showcased his resilience. The Chargers will look to capitalize on his skills as they prepare for the upcoming season.
Becton’s signing is part of a larger trend as the Chargers take significant steps to improve their roster this offseason. The NFL’s legal negotiation window opened on March 10, allowing teams to engage in signings and trades.
As other teams in the league also make moves—such as significant trades involving key players like wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster and quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo—the Chargers aim to solidify their offensive line and enhance their chances for success next season.
