Chargers Sign Center Andre James After Raiders Release

Los Angeles, CA — The Los Angeles Chargers have signed center Andre James, who previously played for the Las Vegas Raiders, the team announced on Tuesday. This move comes shortly after James was released by the Raiders, and it marks his return to the AFC West.
James, 27, had a successful 2024 season with the Raiders, starting 11 games and establishing himself as a reliable option at center. According to Pro Football Focus, he allowed two or fewer pressures in eight of those games, finishing eighth among all interior linemen in pass-block win rate, with an impressive statistic of 96 percent.
The veteran center has accumulated significant experience since entering the league as an undrafted free agent in 2019. Over six seasons, he has played a total of 89 games, starting 60 of them. In 2023, James had his best year yet, earning career-high grades in various categories from PFF, and ranked among the top centers for both offensive and pass-blocking grades.
“I’m excited to join the Chargers and return to Southern California,” said James, who spent his college years at UCLA. “It’s a great opportunity for me to contribute to a team with playoff ambitions and to work with a talented roster.”
During his college career, James showcased versatility by playing multiple positions along the offensive line. He began as a right tackle at UCLA before transitioning to left tackle in his final year. This adaptability will be beneficial for the Chargers as they look to solidify their offensive line.
James is also known for his exceptional athleticism; he was a standout track and field athlete in high school, earning multiple state championships in shot put. His explosive background complements his football skills, potentially enhancing the Chargers’ offensive production.
His signing adds depth to the Chargers’ offensive line, which has been a focus for the organization this offseason. With Zion Johnson and Bradley Bozeman also on the roster, the competition at the center position is expected to be fierce as the team gears up for the 2025 season.
General Manager Tom Telesco expressed his enthusiasm for bringing James on board. “Andre brings a wealth of experience and talent to our offensive line,” Telesco said. “We expect him to play a crucial role in our offensive scheme moving forward.”
The Chargers have been active this offseason, making several strategic moves to enhance their team. With players like James joining the roster, fans are hopeful that the franchise can make a significant push for success in the upcoming season.
