Chargers Sign Mekhi Becton to Boost Offensive Line

LOS ANGELES, CA – The Los Angeles Chargers announced Friday that they have signed former Philadelphia Eagles guard Mekhi Becton to a two-year, $20 million contract. This signing comes as the Chargers aim to address their significant weaknesses in the interior offensive line.
Becton, a first-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, finds new life with the Chargers after transitioning from tackle to guard. The 25-year-old had a strong performance last season, finishing 24th in run block win rate among guards, a notable improvement compared to his teammates.
Last season, the Chargers struggled notably with their rushing attack, with their interior offensive line ranked among the worst in the NFL. They finished the year with poor grades in run block efficiency, highlighted by center grading 160th, left guard 165th, and right guard 188th, according to team statistics.
“Mekhi’s skill set and his size will significantly help our rushing game and provide a solid protection framework for our quarterbacks,” said Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh. “We believe he can have an immediate impact.”
Becton originally signed a one-year, $2.75 million contract with the Eagles in 2023 and quickly established himself as a reliable right guard. After overcoming injury challenges that kept him sidelined for most of the previous two seasons, he started 15 regular-season games for the Super Bowl champion Eagles, contributing to their success with a formidable offensive line.
This new deal may lead the Chargers to release current right guard Storm Norton, potentially saving the team $6.75 million, according to sources. Such a move indicates the organization’s confidence in Becton’s capability to stabilize the offensive line.
“I’m excited to be part of the Chargers and looking forward to the opportunity to block for a dynamic back like Najee Harris,” Becton said in a statement. “Playing guard allowed me to showcase my blocking skills, and I’m ready to build on my success here.”
The Chargers are optimistic that with Becton on board, they can enhance their offensive efficiency in the upcoming season.
