Charlie Senior has just made waves at the Paris Olympics by securing Australia‘s seventh Olympic boxing medal. He pulled off a surprising victory against Carlo Paalam, claiming a split points decision in a nail-biting quarterfinal match.

The Australian, competing in the 57kg category, managed to defeat the silver medallist from Tokyo with a score of 3-2 in a match that kept everyone on the edge of their seats. The fight took place at the North Paris Arena on Saturday night, Australian time. With this win, Senior is now assured of taking home at least a bronze medal, thanks to the Olympic format where semi-final losers are also awarded medals.

This victory is particularly special for Australia, as the country hasn’t had many boxing medallists in the Olympics. Senior expressed his ambition, stating, “I don’t come here for just a bronze medal, I come here for gold and that’s what I’m going to leave with.”

In an intense showdown, Senior lost the first round 3-2 but bounced back with an aggressive attack in the second round, again winning by the same margin. The judges had mixed opinions, but ultimately, the third round was scored in his favor by three of the five judges. He celebrated his victory by doing a backflip in the center of the ring, much to the delight of the Australian contingent present.

Senior also paid tribute to his late grandfather Dennis, who passed away after battling cancer last year and whom he couldn’t attend the funeral for. Senior mentioned that his grandfather’s memory has been a motivating force for him during the Olympics.

Looking ahead, Senior is set to face Abdumalik Khalokov in the semi-finals. Both fighters previously showcased their skills and even exchanged backflips after a match in the last tournament. Senior seems ready for another exciting bout and is determined to keep pushing towards that gold medal.
