CHARLOTTE, N.C. — In the 2023 NBA Draft, the Charlotte Hornets faced a pivotal decision: select Alabama standout Brandon Miller or G League Ignite guard Scoot Henderson with the No. 2 overall pick. While the San Antonio Spurs secured the coveted No. 1 pick and French phenom Victor Wembanyama, the Hornets opted for Miller, a choice that has paid dividends as the rookie swingman emerges as one of the league’s most promising young talents.

Miller, who finished second in the Rookie of the Year race behind Wembanyama, has quickly established himself as a potent offensive weapon. Averaging 17.3 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game, Miller has become a cornerstone for the Hornets, showcasing his elite shooting ability with a 37.3% three-point percentage. His development has validated Charlotte’s decision to pass on Henderson, who was selected third overall by the Portland Trail Blazers.

Henderson, once considered a can’t-miss prospect, has struggled to find his footing in the NBA. After averaging 14.0 points and 5.4 assists as a rookie, his production has dipped in his sophomore season, with averages of 10.9 points and 5.0 assists through 31 games. The 20-year-old guard has yet to crack Portland’s starting lineup consistently, raising questions about his long-term fit with the team.

“Brandon has been everything we hoped for and more,” said Hornets head coach Steve Clifford. “His ability to stretch the floor and create his own shot has been a game-changer for us.”

Meanwhile, Henderson’s struggles have been magnified by Portland’s decision to prioritize other young guards, such as Anfernee Simons and Shaedon Sharpe, in their rotation. Despite flashes of potential, Henderson’s shooting inefficiency (39.8% from the field) and defensive limitations have hindered his progress.

“Scoot is still learning,” said Blazers coach Chauncey Billups. “The point guard position is the hardest to master in this league, and he’s putting in the work. It’s just going to take time.”

While Henderson’s future remains uncertain, Miller has solidified his place as a rising star. His ability to thrive alongside Hornets’ franchise player LaMelo Ball has given Charlotte a dynamic young core to build around. For now, the Hornets can rest easy knowing they made the right choice in the 2023 draft.
