Charlotte Hornets Eye Chris Paul for Hero’s Homecoming

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Charlotte Hornets are considering bringing back one of North Carolina‘s favorite basketball sons, Chris Paul, as he becomes an unrestricted free agent this summer. The seasoned point guard just concluded his 19th season in the NBA, showcasing a remarkable career filled with accolades, including 12 All-Star selections and 11 All-NBA honors.
Despite averaging just 8.8 points per game last season—his lowest career average—Paul remains a respected leader in the league. His presence could greatly benefit the Hornets’ young roster. Head coach Charles Lee acknowledged the impact veteran players like Taj Gibson can have, and Paul would likely offer similar mentorship.
The Hornets faced significant challenges last season after LaMelo Ball‘s ankle injury, leaving them to rely on players like Damion Baugh, Jaylen Sims, and KJ Simpson as point guard options. Paul, known as the “Point God,” could bring stability and experience that the team desperately needs.
Additionally, the opportunity for young guards like Ball and Simpson to learn from Paul could prove invaluable for their development. Current San Antonio Spur Stephon Castle remarked on the benefits of playing alongside Paul, highlighting his extensive understanding of the game.
This summer, Charlotte has a $14 million cap space, which includes a non-taxpayer mid-level exception that could deliver Paul at a potentially discounted rate. If the Hornets secure a high draft pick, they could pair Paul with standout prospects like Cooper Flagg, enhancing their chances of reaching the Play-In Tournament next season.
