The Chatham-Kent community is deeply saddened as they mourn the tragic loss of Craig Spence, the beloved captain of the Blenheim Blades, following a fatal collision on Highway 401 in London. The collision, involving two vehicles, occurred in the eastbound lanes of Highway 401 at Colonel Talbot Road around 3 p.m. on Tuesday, claiming Spence’s life at the scene.

A close friend has initiated a fundraising campaign to support Spence’s family with funeral costs and other expenses, as investigations into the cause of the collision are ongoing.

Expressions of condolences and tributes have poured in from the local hockey community, with the Blades hockey club remembering Spence as an exceptional player, teammate, brother, and friend. His impact on and off the ice has left a lasting impression on all those who had the privilege to know him.

Prior to his tenure with the Blades, Spence served as an assistant captain with the Chatham Maroons and played a pivotal role in winning the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League’s Western Conference championship in the 2021-22 season.

The Blades organization has postponed their awards ceremony to a later date, allowing players the time needed to come to terms with the loss of their teammate and celebrate the life of Craig Spence.

Arrangements for visitation and funeral services for Spence have yet to be announced as the community continues to grieve the untimely passing of this young hockey star.

Anyone who may have witnessed the collision on Highway 401 in London is urged to reach out to the authorities to provide any relevant information that could aid in the ongoing investigation.
