TV Chef Rick Stein Reflects on Life after Heart Surgery
Renowned TV chef Rick Stein has opened up about his perspective on life following a life-saving heart operation. The 77-year-old restaurateur, based in Padstow, recently underwent the procedure at the Royal Brompton Hospital in London after his cardiologist discovered issues with his aorta. Rick had been experiencing breathlessness for several years, and his doctor informed him that without the surgery, his condition would be fatal.

Speaking candidly in an interview, Rick confessed to contemplating death deeply. He also shared his gratitude towards his second wife, Sarah Burns, for her unwavering care and support, especially considering his tumultuous relationship with his manic depressive father.

However, since his successful recovery, Rick’s optimism about his health has grown considerably. Despite acknowledging his limited time ahead due to his age and life’s inherent uncertainties, he emphasized the significance of maintaining good health and embracing life’s pleasures to avoid dwelling on the finite nature of existence.

Regarding his business ventures, Rick assured that his Cornish restaurant remains in good shape. Although the previous year saw a reported pre-tax loss of £347,000, compared to a £3.7 million profit the year before, Rick dismissed the claims, deeming them as solely related to a specific part of his business. He highlighted the current challenges faced by the restaurant industry, including soaring fish prices and the impact of rising fuel costs, which disrupted profit projections.

Furthermore, Rick expressed his concerns about attracting young and talented chefs to work in restaurants. He acknowledged that the industry encounters difficulties in recruiting aspiring chefs who possess passion and skill, particularly for establishments without celebrity status or Michelin stars. Rick shared amusing anecdotes from his early days as a chef, recalling instances where some staff members, not destined for culinary careers, wreaked unintentional havoc in the kitchen.

To showcase his culinary expertise and connect with his fans, Rick will be embarking on an “Evening with Rick Stein” tour starting from March 15 to March 30, commencing in Buxton, Derbyshire.
