Chelsea Barcelona Women's Champions League

LONDON, England – Chelsea is set to face a daunting challenge today as they host FC Barcelona in the second leg of their Women’s Champions League semifinal. After suffering a heavy 4-1 defeat in the first leg, the Blues aim to overcome a three-goal deficit to secure a place in the final.

Barcelona, the reigning champions, have consistently been a thorn in Chelsea’s side. The two teams have met in the semifinals for three consecutive years, with Barcelona eliminating Chelsea in the last two and also defeating them 4-0 in the 2021 final.

“What we need to do is leave everything on the pitch and have no regrets,” Chelsea coach Sonia Bompastor said in her pre-match program notes. She emphasized the vital role of the fans and how they can impact the game. Chelsea also has the Women’s Super League title race on their mind, needing just four points from their remaining three matches.

Former England goalkeeper Karen Bardsley commented on the challenges Chelsea faces. “It will be a tough mountain to climb. They must keep a clean sheet against Barcelona, who have scored nearly 40 goals this season alone in the Champions League,” she said. Bardsley believes Chelsea has the quality to compete but acknowledged the significant task ahead.

Chelsea has made three changes to their lineup since the first leg. Niamh Charles, Naomi Girma, and Sjoeke Nusken will start, while Nathalie Bjorn will not be involved, and Wieke Kaptein and Aggie Beever-Jones have dropped to the bench. Barcelona also made two adjustments to their team, including starting Clàudia Pina, who has been instrumental this season.

In the first leg held at Estadi Johan Cruyff, Barcelona’s Ewa Pajor opened the scoring, and Pina later added goals that led to Chelsea’s disappointing outcome. Despite Sandy Baltimore’s goal for Chelsea, Barcelona reclaimed their two-goal advantage shortly after. “It’s a good result, but everything still needs to be done,” Pina said after the match.

As the teams prepare for kickoff at 2 p.m. BST, Chelsea’s players are under immense pressure to deliver a memorable comeback. Barcelona appeared relaxed during their warm-up, confident in their lead and ready for the challenge that awaits them.

“In football, everything is possible. We need to score early to apply pressure on Barcelona,” Bompastor said, showing optimism despite the uphill task.
