As anticipation builds for the start of the UEFA Women’s Champions League, a familiar rivalry is poised to reignite as Chelsea FC goes up against Real Madrid. The two teams, who have faced each other in the last two seasons of the competition, will meet again on Tuesday, October 8, at Stamford Bridge in London.

Real Madrid, officially named Real Madrid Club de FĂștbol Femenino, is based in the Spanish capital and was established in 2020. Under the guidance of head coach Alberto Toril, they achieved a second-place finish in the 2023/24 Liga F season. The team plays their home matches at the Alfredo Di Stefano Stadium, donning their signature white kits, earning them the nickname “Las Blancas.”

The team’s best performance in the Women’s Champions League came during their debut in the 2021/22 season, advancing through the qualifying rounds to reach the quarterfinals. During that run, they were eventually eliminated by rivals Barcelona with an aggregate score of 8-3. In the subsequent campaigns, the club was drawn in the same group as Chelsea but failed to proceed beyond the group stages, finishing third in 2022/23 and fourth last term.

The previous encounters between Chelsea and Real Madrid include two draws and two victories for Chelsea with scores of 1-1, 2-2, 2-0, and 2-1. Real Madrid enters this season’s group stage undefeated in the Liga F, boasting four victories in four matches. They secured their Champions League spot by defeating Sporting CP with scores of 2-1 and 3-1 in the second-round qualifiers.

Among the players reuniting with Chelsea fans will be Melanie Leupolz, who transferred to Real Madrid this summer after four successful years at Chelsea. During her tenure, Leupolz contributed to nine domestic victories, including four Women’s Super League titles.

Another player to watch is Scotland’s Caroline Weir, the sole British player in Real Madrid’s squad, who will face her national team colleague on the opposing side. As excitement mounts, tickets have been released for Kingsmeadow season ticket holders, with additional ticket categories expected to be available soon.
