Chelsea Target Roberto De Zerbi as New Manager, Possible Shake-Up in Goalkeeping Position Expected
Chelsea Football Club is eyeing former Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi as the potential successor to Mauricio Pochettino, who recently parted ways with the London club.
Roberto De Zerbi is currently a frontrunner for the managerial position at Stamford Bridge, alongside other contenders Kieran McKenna, Enzo Maresca, and Thomas Frank.
The Italian coach, who left Brighton at the end of the season, has been reported to have a compensation clause of €10 million, reduced from the original €15 million, in his previous contract.
If De Zerbi does take over the reins at Chelsea, there could be changes in the goalkeeper position, particularly impacting current first-choice shot-stopper Robert Sanchez.
Robert Sanchez, who joined Chelsea from Brighton last year for a hefty fee of £25 million, had previously lost his place in the Brighton team under De Zerbi’s management.
During his time at Brighton, De Zerbi alluded to having made tough decisions regarding Sanchez, indicating a willingness to make necessary changes for the team’s benefit.
The history between De Zerbi and Sanchez suggests that Chelsea may look to reinforce their goalkeeping options in the upcoming transfer window if the Italian is appointed as the new manager.
Reports have linked Chelsea with a potential move for Burnley and England U21 goalkeeper James Trafford, with the Blues rumored to be preparing a £20 million bid to secure his services.
