Chet Holmgren Set to Return for Thunder Against Bucks

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — Oklahoma City Thunder center Chet Holmgren is expected to be available for Sunday’s game against the Milwaukee Bucks after resting in Saturday’s win over the Detroit Pistons. Holmgren’s return comes after a brief absence due to injury management and marks a critical phase as the NBA regular season nears its end.
Holmgren, who scored 23 points with 15 rebounds in a recent 118-112 win against the Boston Celtics, has struggled with consistency since returning from a three-game absence in February. In that game against Boston, he recorded an efficient shooting performance, going 8 for 14 from the field and making three 3-pointers.
“I feel good and ready to contribute,” Holmgren said. “Resting yesterday was part of the plan to stay healthy and maintain momentum as we head into the playoffs.”
The Thunder have seen a significant boost in performance with Holmgren on the court. The team is 8-2 in games where he and fellow center play together. Their combined presence has led to a strong plus-12.3 net rating on the floor.
As playoff contention heats up, teams across the league are navigating injury concerns and managing player health, with many teams still jockeying for seeding. Cautiously resting key players like Holmgren has been a popular strategy as the postseason approaches.
Teams like the Cleveland Cavaliers, who have clinched a playoff spot, are also exhibiting similar health-focused strategies. Coach Kenny Atkinson was able to deploy 14 players against the Bucks, reflecting a balanced approach as injuries begin to impact the league’s standings.
“The key to success is balancing health with performance,” said NBA analyst Dave McMenamin. “Coaches are facing tough calls about whether to prioritize resting players or building chemistry for the playoffs.”
As the season enters its final month, the Thunder, currently positioned well in the standings, will need to ensure that their stars remain healthy. The upcoming matchup against the Bucks will be pivotal for maintaining their playoff momentum.
