Chicago Bears Focus on New Stadium in Arlington Heights

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. — The Chicago Bears are shifting their focus to a new stadium in Arlington Heights. The team announced on May 16, 2025, that they are making significant progress in discussions with local leaders to make the project a reality.
“Over the last few months, we have made significant progress with the leaders in Arlington Heights, and look forward to continuing to work with state and local leaders on making a transformative economic development project for the region a reality,” the team stated.
The Bears plan to build on the former Arlington International Racecourse site, which they purchased in 2022. This move marks a shift after a year of trying to establish a stadium in downtown Chicago.
While the Bears will not seek state funding for the stadium itself, they may request financial assistance for infrastructure to support a larger entertainment district around the stadium. State lawmakers will need to pass a “megaproject” bill to allow for negotiations with local governments over property taxes.
Pritzker’s office declined to comment on the announcement or the potential legislation. However, local officials, including the new Arlington Heights Mayor James Tinaglia, have expressed their support for the stadium project.
“As the mayor has said several times, the door remains open in the city of Chicago,” said spokesman Cassio Mendoza. But the Bears have indicated a strong desire to move to Arlington Heights.
Senator Robert Peters, a progressive Democrat from Chicago, criticized the Bears for the timing of their announcement, stating that it is inappropriate given the pressing budget concerns facing the state.
Although there are logistical hurdles ahead, the Bears believe the new stadium site will provide them with greater control and flexibility, compared to their current home at Soldier Field, which they have occupied since 1971.
The stadium in Arlington Heights could host large events, including the Super Bowl and NCAA tournaments, making it a significant asset for the community and the team. Meanwhile, negotiations will continue as the Bears work to finalize their plans.
