Chicago Blackhawks Make Strategic Moves Ahead of Trade Deadline
Before the 2024 Trade Deadline, Chicago Blackhawks General Manager Kyle Davidson ensured stability within the team by extending contracts for key players Jason Dickinson, Nick Foligno, and Petr Mrázek to two-year deals in January. Rumors of their potential departure were put to rest, leaving only Zachary Zaitsev and Kantserov as pending unrestricted free agents likely to attract interest in the trade market ahead of the deadline.
An interesting trade maneuver by Davidson saw the Senators seeking to clear cap space for the acquisition of Jakob Chychrun, leading to a deal where the Blackhawks acquired Zaitsev and received two draft picks in return, a move that has proven beneficial for the team. Zaitsev has contributed as a reliable bottom-pair defenseman, tallying 10 points in 44 games for the Blackhawks this season, adding value beyond the trade itself.
The inclusion of Kantserov in the trade also holds promise for the Blackhawks, as the rookie forward has shown potential with 15 points in 51 games in the KHL. Additionally, the acquisition of a 2026 fourth-round draft pick offers further opportunity for Chicago to bolster its future roster, making the trade a strategic long-term investment for the franchise.
In another transaction, the Blackhawks part ways with Josiah Slavin, whose development trajectory had slowed during his time with the organization. Slavin, the younger brother of standout Hurricanes defenseman Jaccob Slavin, was exchanged for Hunter Drew, a move that aimed to revitalize Slavin’s career path. However, Drew’s tenure with the Blackhawks’ AHL affiliate team in Rockford did not yield significant results, as he now finds himself with the Coyotes’ minor league affiliate in Tucson.
