Joey Gallo Baseball Player Release News

GLENDALE, Ariz. — The Chicago White Sox announced Sunday the unconditional release of veteran slugger Joey Gallo as they finalize their roster ahead of the upcoming season. At 31 years old, Gallo struggled during the Cactus League with a mere 2-for-20 showing and 11 strikeouts in nine games.

Gallo, who signed a minor league contract with the White Sox in February after the Washington Nationals declined to exercise an $8 million mutual option, hit .161 with 10 home runs and 27 RBIs during a disappointing campaign last year. His batting average has sharply declined over recent seasons, and currently sits at .194 for his decade-long career.

“We had to make a tough decision,” the White Sox general manager stated regarding Gallo’s release. “We are in a position where we need to evaluate our options and build for the future.”

Once a highly regarded prospect, Gallo was drafted in the first round by the Texas Rangers in 2012 and became a two-time All-Star. His peak years came in 2019 and 2021, where he showcased incredible power, hitting 70 home runs in 280 games and achieving a .209 batting average with a wRC+ of 121. However, his career has been marred by high strikeout rates, which have hindered his offensive consistency.

Despite being celebrated for his ability to make impactful contributions, Gallo’s struggles intensified over the past three seasons, as he averaged just .166 with a wRC+ of 88, striking out over 40% of the time. The decline in both defense and offense has made him a less appealing option for teams looking for a reliable bench player.

“It’s been a roller-coaster ride for Joey,” said an unnamed source close to Gallo. “He’s an incredibly talented player, but the numbers just haven’t reflected his potential for the last couple of years.”

The White Sox, coming off a historic 41-121 season which resulted in the most losses in Major League Baseball history, are in the midst of a rebuild. They plan to utilize players like Andrew Vaughn and Luis Robert in key positions, further reducing the need for Gallo.

With the regular season set to begin on March 27 against the Los Angeles Angels, Gallo’s path back into the league remains uncertain. Teams looking for additional depth at first base or outfield might consider Gallo, though his recent performances may complicate his return to the majors.

As Gallo looks toward new opportunities, the baseball community continues to follow his career developments closely.

Meanwhile, White Sox pitching prospect Mason Adams was diagnosed with a flexor strain in his right elbow, adding to the team’s list of challenges as they head into the season.
