Chiefs Embrace ‘Aggressive as Fire’ Mindset Heading into Week 8
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Chiefs are adopting an aggressive new mentality as they prepare for Week 8 of the NFL season. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes is averaging 7.7 air yards per attempt this season, marking his most aggressive performance since 2020.
The shift in attitude can be seen in the team’s latest fashion statement: T-shirts emblazoned with the letters “AAF,” which stands for “Aggressive as Fire.” Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy shared the phrase during a recent team meeting, aiming to instill a more assertive mindset in the players.
“You could say it’s ‘Aggressive as fire,’” Nagy said with a laugh, while hinting at the more explicit actual slogan. “It’s not just the offense. It’s the entire building.”
The initiative started earlier this year as the coaching staff discussed their goals for the season. Nagy wanted the team to focus on making deep plays and creating explosive offensive moments. The conversation sparked an idea that blossomed into a rallying cry for the entire squad.
“It started with just the mentality, ‘You know what? This is where we’re at. We have to speak it into existence,’” Nagy explained. “It needs to be every day, all the time: the word ‘aggressive.’”
After a recent large win against the Las Vegas Raiders, receiver Tyquan Thornton tweeted a photo of the receivers with the terms “EGE” and “AAF.” He explained that these slogans stemmed from the conversations with Nagy, emphasizing teamwork and shared success.
The Chiefs’ quarterbacks have fully embraced the mantra, using it as both a reminder and motivator. “AAF” has become a part of their conversations throughout practice and in the locker room, as they reinforce their commitment to this offensive strategy.
As the playoffs approach, the Chiefs have shown significant improvement in their scoring efficiency. Entering Week 8, they have scored on 52 percent of their offensive drives, the second-best performance in the NFL.
Nagy noted that the mantra’s simplicity helps keep Mahomes focused on the offensive goal. After scoring touchdowns this season, players often greet Mahomes on the sideline with “You were AAF,” recognizing his contributions to their success.
“It’s fun,” Nagy said. “The guys have been great.” With Mahomes leading the charge, the Chiefs are poised to continue their aggressive approach throughout the season.
