Chiefs Sign Former 49ers RB Elijah Mitchell to One-Year Deal

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Chiefs have signed former San Francisco 49ers running back Elijah Mitchell to a one-year contract worth up to $3.5 million, solidifying their backfield options for the upcoming NFL season.
The deal, confirmed on March 10, 2025, comes as the Chiefs look to bolster their rushing attack following a disappointing previous season. Mitchell, drafted in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL Draft (No. 194 overall), has spent his entire NFL career with the 49ers, where he established himself as a capable rusher before injuries hampered his performance.
“Elijah is one of the most talented runners that I’ve ever been around,” said 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey. “His ability to find space and run effectively is impressive.”
Mitchell, who missed the entire 2024 season due to a hamstring injury, will aim to return to his rookie form after a season on injured reserve. In 2021, he recorded 207 carries for 963 yards and five rushing touchdowns and added 169 rushing yards in that postseason, making a significant impact in his debut year.
Over three seasons, the 26-year-old running back has totaled 1,523 rushing yards on 327 attempts and nine rushing touchdowns in 27 games, including 12 starts. His 2023 performance included 11 games, where he amassed 281 rushing yards and two touchdowns.
Chiefs general manager Brett Veach expressed optimism about Mitchell’s potential to enhance Kansas City’s rushing game, especially as the team navigates the offseason looking to improve following an inconsistent running game last season. “We believe Elijah’s style and skill set fit perfectly with what we’re trying to do,” Veach stated.
The Chiefs’ decision to sign Mitchell aligns with their overall strategy to rebuild the backfield, particularly after having relied heavily on Isiah Pacheco and aging veterans Kareem Hunt and Samaje Perine, both of whom are approaching free agency.
Mitchell’s signing is anticipated to provide the Chiefs with a reliable option who can effectively balance the rushing duties, and with hopes of remaining injury-free, he could revive his career in Kansas City.
By selecting Mitchell, the Chiefs aim to improve their offensive capabilities while avoiding the need to draft a running back early in the upcoming NFL Draft. This strategic signing marks a proactive move as the Chiefs seek another Super Bowl run, following their recent successes in the league.
