Chiefs’ Spagnuolo Draws Head Coaching Interest Amid Super Bowl Run
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — As the Kansas City Chiefs chase a third consecutive Super Bowl title, defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo has emerged as a top candidate for multiple NFL head coaching vacancies. Spagnuolo, 65, has already interviewed with the New York Jets, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Las Vegas Raiders, sparking concerns about his potential departure from the Chiefs.
Spagnuolo, who joined the Chiefs in 2019, has been instrumental in transforming the team’s defense into one of the league’s most formidable units. Under his leadership, the defense has played a critical role in the Chiefs’ recent success, including their Super Bowl victories in 2020, 2023, and 2024. Despite the growing interest from other teams, Spagnuolo remains focused on his current role. “I’m a tunnel vision guy,” he told reporters Wednesday. “Right now, it’s all about winning another ring.”
Head coach Andy Reid has expressed support for Spagnuolo’s aspirations, acknowledging his assistant’s qualifications for a head coaching position. “I think both of them deserve an opportunity again to be head coaches,” Reid said, referring to Spagnuolo and offensive coordinator Matt Nagy. “They’re obviously getting some play here, so other people recognize that, too.”
Spagnuolo’s previous head coaching stints, however, have been less successful. He compiled a 10-38 record with the St. Louis Rams from 2009 to 2011 and went 1-3 as the New York Giants‘ interim head coach in 2017. His age and mixed track record could deter some teams, but his recent success with the Chiefs has kept him in high demand.
If Spagnuolo departs, the Chiefs will need to find a capable replacement to maintain their defensive dominance. Potential candidates include Dennis Allen, the former Saints defensive coordinator, and Lou Anarumo, who recently led the Cincinnati Bengals‘ defense. Another intriguing option could be Robert Saleh, the former Jets head coach and 49ers defensive coordinator, who is currently fielding interviews for both head coach and defensive coordinator roles.
For now, Spagnuolo remains focused on the task at hand: helping the Chiefs secure another championship. “I’ll let all of that take care of itself,” he said of his future. “Right now, it’s all about Denver.”
