Chile Tsunami Warning Earthquake

PUERTO WILLIAMS, Chile — A tsunami warning has been issued for the coastal area of the Magallanes region after a 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Argentina on Friday. The earthquake occurred at 1:58 p.m. local time, approximately 219 kilometers (136 miles) from Ushuaia, Argentina, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The tremor, which hit the Drake Passage at a depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles), prompted Chile’s National Disaster Prevention and Response Service to call for evacuations to safer areas above 30 meters (98 feet) in elevation. President Gabriel Boric urged citizens through a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “We call for evacuation of the coastline throughout the Magallanes region.”

Local emergency services reported that over 1,100 residents in Puerto Williams have moved to safer locations. Meanwhile, authorities advised residents to remain calm and heed the directions of emergency responders.

“All state resources are available to address any potential emergencies,” President Boric added, noting the importance of preparedness in response to the tsunami threat. Videos shared on social media depicted individuals leaving coastal areas amidst blaring emergency sirens.

Chile’s Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service (SHOA) indicated that hazardous waves could impact areas within 300 kilometers of the earthquake’s epicenter. The risk is being closely monitored, and local officials have been instructed to alert vulnerable populations.

In Ushuaia, local authorities confirmed that no property damage or evacuations had occurred, with the quake primarily felt in the city and surrounding areas. “In the face of these types of events, it is important to remain calm,” stated the local government.

As authorities continue to evaluate the situation, evacuation protocols remain in effect, and precautions are being established for all affected coastal regions.
