Chippewas Rally to Edge Ball State 69-67 in Dramatic Finish

MUNCIE, Ind. — Central Michigan rallied from a 21-point deficit to secure a thrilling 69-67 victory over Ball State on Tuesday night, thanks to Jakobi Heady‘s game-winning shot with just eight seconds remaining.
The Chippewas (14-16, 7-10 Mid-American Conference) are now tied with the Cardinals (14-16, 7-10) for ninth place in the conference standings, one game behind Western Michigan and Bowling Green. Only the top eight teams will qualify for the MAC tournament, scheduled to begin March 13 at Rocket Arena in Cleveland.
Heady led Central Michigan with 18 points and contributed six rebounds, while Anthony Pritchard added another 18 points along with seven rebounds and six assists. Despite shooting just 31 percent in the first half, the Chippewas made a remarkable comeback in the second half, hitting 66.7 percent of their shots.
The first half saw Central Michigan struggle as Ball State took control, leading 39-22 at halftime. The Cardinals effectively utilized a 13-0 run early in the game, with Jermahri Hill and Mickey Pearson leading the charge.
In the second half, however, Central Michigan found their rhythm. After trailing by as much as 21 points (43-22) shortly after the break, they generated a 9-0 run to cut the lead significantly. Coach Brian Barbee praised the team’s determination, saying, “I thought we defended fairly well… In the second half, we tightened up our defense and were able to take advantage on the offensive end.”
With just over two minutes remaining, Heady tied the score at 63-63 with a three-point play, followed by a scoring exchange that put the Chippewas ahead 67-65. Ball State briefly tied the game again at 67-67 before Heady’s decisive jumper sealed the game for Central Michigan.
Ball State’s main offensive threat of the night was Hill, who led all scorers with 21 points, while Pearson contributed 11 points. Following the game, both teams were slated to play again on Friday: Central Michigan hosting Northern Illinois and Ball State visiting Miami (OH).
As the regular season draws to a close, these critical matchups will determine postseason qualifications. The Chippewas will honor their seniors in a special ceremony during Friday’s game.
