GUADALAJARA, Mexico – Chivas Femenil secured a significant advantage in the first leg of the quarterfinals, defeating Pumas 2-0 on Sunday. The win puts Chivas in a favorable position as they head into the return match next week.
The match at Estadio Akron saw Viridiana Salazar and Alicia Cervantes score in the second half, leading to a strong performance by Chivas. The first half was tightly contested, with both teams displaying aggressive play that resulted in four yellow cards being issued.
Chivas had their first real chance at goal in the 36th minute from a free kick taken by Carolina Jaramillo, which was saved by Pumas goalkeeper Wendy Toledo. Alicia Cervantes attempted to capitalize on the rebound, only for defender Mónica Alvarado to clear the ball off the line.
The breakthrough for Chivas came in the 60th minute when Kinberly Guzmán launched a long pass to Viridiana Salazar, who maneuvered into the box and scored with a well-placed shot past Toledo.
Chivas remained relentless in their pursuit of goals, narrowly missing a second when Cervantes’ header struck the crossbar after a save from Toledo.
The second goal arrived in the 78th minute when Carolina Jaramillo assisted Alicia Cervantes. Initially ruled offside, the goal was confirmed after a VAR review.
A late attempt by Adriana Iturbide in stoppage time was disallowed following another VAR check, capping Chivas’ scoring at two. The series remains open, with the second leg scheduled for Sunday at Estadio Olímpico Universitario in Mexico City.
