Chris Eubank Jr Sparks Interest with Traditional Saudi Dress at Open Workout
Chris Eubank Jr, the British professional boxer, made headlines when he commenced his open workout wearing a traditional Saudi Arabian dress, known as a thawb or thobe. This event took place ahead of his upcoming bout against Polish boxer Kamil Szeremeta, which is scheduled on the undercard of the highly anticipated fight between Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol in Saudi Arabia. The match forms part of the Riyadh Season promotion.
The decision to don the traditional Saudi attire is notable as it is uncommon for fighters to embrace national costumes at such events, despite the presence of the thawb being a familiar sight at boxing matches in the region. Saudi Arabia has been an enthusiastic host for large-scale boxing events in recent years. Eubank’s choice to perform his pad work while still wearing the robe added a distinctive cultural aspect to the proceedings.
“This is the traditional outfit of the Saudis, this is called a thobe,” Eubank explained when questioned about his sartorial choice. “And it is a privilege to be here and I’m respecting the community and the culture.” Eubank further remarked on the practicality of the garment in Saudi Arabia’s warm climate, jokingly considering wearing it for the remainder of his visit.
This appearance comes at a critical time in Eubank’s career. He has not fought since his match in September last year, and he has openly stated the importance of his fight against Szeremeta. “This is the most important fight of my career,” Eubank stated. “Because a flat performance or, God forbid, a defeat means I don’t get all the mega fights I’ve been hunting for and talking about for so long.”
Saudi Arabia’s increased involvement in sports, including boxing, is part of a broader investment strategy amounting to an estimated £5 billion over the past five years. This includes efforts such as the LIV Golf to rival the PGA Tour and the introduction of major football stars like Neymar into their domestic leagues.
Beyond the boxing ring, Eubank has experienced personal challenges, notably following the death of his younger brother, Sebastian, three years ago. Eubank has since taken on a guardianship role for Sebastian’s son, Raheem. He shared how this responsibility has become a driving force in his life, stating, “I use Raheem as a tool to strengthen my will and my soul and my spirit.”
