Christopher Nolan’s ‘Interstellar’ Soars in 10th Anniversary IMAX 70mm Re-Release
Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi epic, ‘Interstellar,’ has returned to theaters in a stunning 70mm IMAX format to celebrate its 10th anniversary. This limited-time re-release has garnered significant attention, with the film earning $4.5 million from just 166 screens in the U.S. and Canada. The 70mm IMAX presentations sold out rapidly, with some tickets reselling for up to $300.
The film, starring Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway, has seen an extraordinary response, with some theaters averaging $70,000 per screen, one of the highest averages of the year. This success underscores the enduring appeal of ‘Interstellar’ and the unique experience offered by IMAX 70mm film. Nolan, who has been a strong advocate for film over digital, noted that the effort to release ‘Interstellar’ in IMAX 70mm ten years ago was a significant undertaking, given the industry’s shift towards digital at the time.
The re-release has been a labor of love for Nolan, who collaborated with IMAX and Paramount to bring the film back to the big screen. The prints, according to Nolan, have not aged and continue to offer a breathtaking cinematic experience. IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond expressed that the company had anticipated the high demand for the re-release, comparing it to the frenzy around Nolan’s other film, ‘Oppenheimer‘.
The success of ‘Interstellar’ in IMAX 70mm is part of a broader trend highlighting the value of film stock in modern cinema. Films like ‘Oppenheimer’ and ‘Dune: Part Two‘ have also seen significant success with IMAX screenings, indicating a renewed interest in the format. Nolan is currently exploring new film technologies with IMAX for his upcoming projects, further solidifying his commitment to the medium.
The re-release has also prompted Nolan to reflect on the film’s lasting impact. He noted that ‘Interstellar’ has become a beloved classic, with many younger viewers who had only seen it at home now eager to experience it on the big screen. The film’s themes of love, family, and exploration have resonated deeply with audiences over the years.
