Cincinnati Bearcats Retain Wes Miller for Fifth Season Amid Challenges

CINCINNATI — Wes Miller will return for a fifth season as head coach of the Cincinnati Bearcats, as announced by Athletic Director John Cunningham. This decision comes after a challenging start to Miller’s tenure, which has yet to yield an NCAA Tournament appearance since he was hired in 2021.
Miller’s team has struggled this season, boasting a dismal 1-11 record in Quad 1 games. Critics and fans alike have expressed concerns about the program’s direction, especially when considering Cincinnati’s rich basketball legacy.
“Wes Miller will be our coach next year,” Cunningham stated. “I believe in Wes, and I trust him to get this program back to where it’s supposed to be – in the NCAA Tournament, competing for championships. That’s the standard. We are in constant communication. There are still games left this season, and I expect us to continue to fight.”
Cunningham did not provide further details on Miller’s retention, but it’s evident that financial factors also play a role. Miller’s contract includes a buyout clause of $13 million if he is fired before April 1, 2025. This figure decreases to $9.9 million after that date and drops again to $4.69 million on April 1, 2026. This gradual reduction makes retaining Miller financially pragmatic for the university.
“Wes has shown the right qualities and work ethic to help us return to the top of the college basketball world,” Cunningham added in a press release. “We believe in his vision and are committed to supporting him in the upcoming season and beyond.”
While the current season has been rocky, there is a sense of hope that the Bearcats can improve under Miller’s leadership. The coaching staff is focusing on recruiting and developing talent as they aim to build a competitive team for future success.
Cincinnati fans are left to wonder if Miller’s upcoming fifth season will be the turning point the program so desperately needs. As the Bearcats look to regain their place in the national spotlight, the path ahead remains challenging but forged with the belief that perseverance will yield results.
