Cincinnati Reds Jackie Robinson Tribute Events

CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Cincinnati Reds observed a significant milestone on April 15, 2025, marking 78 years since Hall of Famer Jackie Robinson broke baseball’s color barrier in 1947. The team hosted a series of events at the P&G MLB Cincinnati Reds Youth Academy in Roselawn to celebrate this historic occasion.

Among the day’s highlights was the annual Joe Morgan Classic, which featured a competitive game between Wilberforce University from Ohio and Dillard University from Louisiana, both historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs). Dillard emerged victorious, defeating Wilberforce with a score of 19-14, while players wore authentic Negro League uniforms to pay homage to Robinson’s legacy.

In addition to the classic, the Skyline Chili Reds Futures High Showcase, presented by PNC, provided local Cincinnati Public Schools baseball and softball teams an opportunity to participate in games honoring Jackie Robinson Day. Riverview East claimed victory over Shroder with a score of 12-10, while Clark Montessori defeated Western Hills 10-6. In softball, Williamsburg dominated Withrow 14-0, and Western Hills secured a win against Hughes, finishing 12-2.

As part of the day’s festivities, an HBCU College Fair took place, featuring representatives from ten HBCUs, including Central State University, Fisk University, Hampton University, Jackson State University, North Carolina A&T State University, Southern University, Tuskegee University, University of Arkansas Pine Bluff, Wilberforce University, and Savannah State University. This fair aimed to educate and inspire students about higher education opportunities.

Jackie Robinson’s courage and tenacity opened doors for countless athletes and changed the face of sports in America. The Reds’ events serve not only to honor his contributions but also to encourage diversity and inclusion within baseball and beyond.
