Cincinnati Reds Sign Garrett Hampson, Activate Hunter Greene

CINCINNATI, Ohio — The Cincinnati Reds announced on Friday that they have signed veteran utilityman Garrett Hampson to a one-year major league contract. Hampson will join the Reds’ big league roster immediately.
This move comes as the Reds made two other roster adjustments. Outfielder Rece Hinds was optioned to Triple-A Louisville, while right-handed pitcher Carson Spiers was transferred from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day IL. Additionally, ace Hunter Greene has been reinstated from the injured list and will start on Friday against the Chicago Cubs.
Hampson, 30, began the season with the Arizona Diamondbacks but was released last week after struggling to make an impact. In 18 games with Arizona, he recorded a batting line of .167/.359/.167 and had only five hits, all singles, in his 30 official at-bats. Despite drawing 10 walks, his poor performance at the plate led to his designation for assignment.
This will be Hampson’s fifth team in four years. Originally drafted in the third round by the Colorado Rockies in 2016, he has also played for Miami and Kansas City. His career batting average is .237 with a .308 on-base percentage and a .323 slugging percentage over 750 plate appearances since April 2022.
The Reds are dealing with multiple injuries, leaving a gap in their infield depth. Notable players on the injured list include Noelvi Marte, Christian Encarnacion-Strand, Jeimer Candelario, Jake Fraley, and Tyler Callihan. With these injuries, the Reds are looking for players who can fill various roles, which makes Hampson’s versatility appealing.
Currently, Spencer Steer is positioned at first base, Matt McLain at second, Elly De La Cruz at shortstop, and utilityman Santiago Espinal at third. Gavin Lux has seen more time as an outfielder but can play several positions as well. The Reds are also carrying three catchers, which adds to the need for a versatile player like Hampson.
Hampson is expected to provide much-needed infield depth and a right-handed bat to support the team as they navigate through player recoveries. The Reds’ upcoming match against the Cubs will mark a significant moment for Hampson as he steps onto the field with his new team.
