Clásico paisa: Medellín and Nacional battle for crucial points

MEDELLÍN, Colombia – This Sunday, Independiente Medellín will host Atlético Nacional at the Atanasio Girardot Stadium in a pivotal Liga BetPlay match. The encounter marks the 17th round of the 2025 Apertura tournament, with significant implications for both teams.
Medellín, currently fifth in the league with 28 points, needs a victory to bolster its chances of qualifying for the semifinals. Coach Alejandro Restrepo‘s team hopes to capitalize on home advantage, with a two-year unbeaten streak against Nacional at home. Their last loss to Nacional in Medellín was over two years ago, on April 29, 2023, when they lost 3-1.
Nacional, directed by Javier Gandolfi, is also in a tight race for the top of the table. With 31 points, a win would solidify their position either at the top or close to it before the final round-robin phase. However, Nacional’s lineup is expected to be weakened due to absences, including key player Marino Hinestroza, who is sidelined by illness.
“We need to make the most of the players available,” Restrepo said at a press conference, acknowledging the challenge of losing important players like Luis ‘El Chino’ Sandoval, who is suspended for two matches.
Baldomero Perlaza also remains uncertain due to a recent injury, but Restrepo mentioned that his recovery is progressing well. On the bright side for Medellín, Daniel Londoño is back after serving a suspension.
Meanwhile, Nacional’s squad may be without several key players due to injuries. Hinestroza, who missed the past week’s training and was unable to participate in the previous match against Deportivo Pasto, remains doubtful for the classic duel.
As excitement builds for the match, the local administration has implemented a significant security detail. Nearly 900 police officers will be present to ensure the safety of fans, with strict entry regulations intended to promote a peaceful atmosphere. This includes restrictions on minors in certain areas of the stadium.
The match kickoff is set for 4:10 p.m. local time, and fans are encouraged to arrive early to avoid congestion. This classic rivalry is more than just a game; it symbolizes the spirit of Antioquia football and the community’s hopes for a spirited yet peaceful clash on the field.
