CLEMSON, S.C. — Clemson Head Coach Dabo Swinney expressed deep disappointment following a 31-14 loss to Syracuse on Saturday, marking the Tigers’ worst start at 1-3 under his leadership. The defeat came at home, significantly impacting the team’s morale and season outlook.

“This is a bad, bad feeling. Terrible,” Swinney said during a post-game interview. “This is what we do. This is our passion. We work incredibly hard to get results that we want to achieve, and when we don’t get them, it’s a pain that’s hard to describe.”

The Tigers, who entered the season ranked in the top five and returned a significant amount of talent, have struggled to live up to expectations. Swinney noted that the team’s performance against Syracuse, which included 503 yards gained, was overshadowed by the critical errors and missed opportunities throughout the game.

Despite the hopeful offseason predictions, Clemson’s loss to Syracuse marked their largest defeat against an unranked opponent since 2001. Swinney’s emotional response on the field highlighted the gravity of the situation for the program, which has not started a season this poorly since 2004.

“I’m human. I’m not a cyborg. This is my life. I’ve been here 23 years. I love this place,” Swinney said. “I feel the pain. Not just my pain; I feel everybody’s pain. That comes with my job, and I don’t run from that.”

Looking ahead, Clemson will take a bye week to regroup before facing North Carolina on October 4. Swinney stated that this time is crucial for resetting goals and focusing on turning the season around.

“There’s no quit in me, and I didn’t see any quit in our team or our staff,” he added. “We have to reset our goals and what we still can do. We can’t sit around and dwell on missed opportunities. It’s basically an eight-game season for us at this point.”
