Cleveland Browns Linebacker Robert Spillane News

BEREA, Ohio — As free agency approaches, the Cleveland Browns are reportedly interested in adding depth to their linebacker corps, especially given the uncertain future of Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah (JOK), who is recovering from a neck injury that cut his 2024 season short.

JOK’s status remains unclear, leading the Browns to consider veterans like Robert Spillane, a seven-year NFL player previously with the Las Vegas Raiders. Spillane has demonstrated resilience and durability, having played at least 14 games in each of the last four seasons.

In 2024, Spillane emerged as a standout, starting all 17 games and racking up 158 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, and two sacks. His impressive performance includes a strong run-defense grade of 87.3 by Pro Football Focus, making him a valuable prospect for a team that struggled defensively last season.

“I think Spillane would fit well with what we need,” a source within the organization told The Associated Press. “He’s a proven tackler against the run, which is essential for our defense going forward.”

Spillane also showcased his capability in coverage, despite being somewhat of a liability in that area. He recorded five interceptions over the past two seasons, proving he can make important plays when needed.

The linebacker position was identified as a weak point for the Browns in the previous season, with JOK being the lone standout. As the team recovers from a disappointing 3-14 record, which placed further emphasis on enhancing the roster, Spillane represents a short-term solution as the Browns explore options during free agency.

Projected contract terms suggest the Browns could acquire Spillane for three years totaling around $24 million, with $13 million guaranteed. This commitment would enable the team to build depth while ensuring they are prepared for any long-term ramifications related to JOK’s health.

General Manager Andrew Berry acknowledged the importance of improving team performance: “We always take a multiyear perspective to our roster planning. We will be active in free agency and look for opportunities to strengthen the team,” he stated during a press conference.

As the Browns prepare for the opening of free agency, set for March 10, discussions centered on improving the quarterback position are also gaining traction. With players like Sam Darnold, Kirk Cousins, and others potentially available, league analysts speculate that significant changes could be on the horizon.

Berry reaffirmed the objective of returning the Browns to playoff contention, addressing both offensive and defensive needs. “We’re focused on enhancing our team’s capabilities to compete for a Super Bowl, not just for the upcoming season, but in the long-term as well,” he said.

Fans and analysts alike are keen to see whether Spillane will be the first of several strategic signings this offseason as the Browns aim to turnaround their fortunes in 2025.
