Cleveland Guardians Activate Slade Cecconi for Major League Debut

CINCINNATI — The Cleveland Guardians have activated right-hander Slade Cecconi from the 15-day injured list ahead of his Major League debut against the Cincinnati Reds on Saturday.
Cecconi, 25, had been sidelined since spring training due to a left oblique strain. He was expected to be part of the rotation but was placed on the injured list to start the season. To make room for Cecconi, Zak Kent has been optioned to Triple-A Columbus.
Before being activated, Cecconi made three rehabilitation starts at Columbus, where he posted an 0-2 record and a 4.85 ERA, allowing seven runs over 13 innings. He pitched 5 2/3 innings last weekend, throwing 68 pitches.
The Guardians acquired Cecconi from the Arizona Diamondbacks in December as part of the trade involving first baseman Josh Naylor. Despite some struggles, Cecconi’s impressive control has made him a promising addition to the Guardians.
Earlier this week, Ben Lively was placed on the injured list with a flexor strain, creating an opportunity for Cecconi to step into the starting rotation. Manager Stephen Vogt expressed confidence in Cecconi’s ability to contribute after his recovery.
As he makes his debut, fans and analysts alike are speculating on his performance against the Reds, especially in a lineup that includes Chase Petty.
Cecconi’s first outing is highly anticipated as both the organization and fans hope he can fulfill his potential as a dependable major league pitcher.
